the new york times has an article in today's paper about america's finest city, san diego.
the piece is an update on what's been happening to us since mayor murphy quit, and how everybody at city hall is in jail, going to jail, indicted or deceased. it was a piece that can make one feel very pessimistic about the city's future.
but is san diego all alone in this type of mess? nope. according to a person interviewed in the article, san diego may just be the canary in the coalmine of american cities that are--or will be--melting-down.
the mayor and the city attorney were both interviewed for the piece.

memorial day weekend marks the un-official first days of summer, which means a lot of different things to many people. to some, their thoughts turn to love.

here is megan rockin' out on a saturday afternoon in south park

the time is ripe to get serious about mt. soledad
enough is enough.
it's a pathetic image: republicans pandering to christian voters by refusing to admit defeat on their beloved mt. soledad symbol of christianity. what a waste of time, and money, neither of which this city has.
it's a cross, and it's a symbol of one faith in particular. that's against the constitution of the state of california, but yet these self-proclaimed law-and-order types have refused to accept the verdicts of the courts to remove it.
now we got jerry sanders, mayor of san diego, saying that it's not about a religious symbol, but about a 50-year-old piece of san diego history, which is a "sacred monument" that's cherished by "all" san diego residents.
apparently mr. sanders has forgotten that at least two people, the plaintiff and his lawyer, don't see it the way he sees it.
mr. sanders and rep. duncan hunter now wants g.w. bush to begin eminent domain proceedings to take over the land and make it a part of the federal park system.
what a crock of shit. this eminent domain process will not get this issue out of the courts, which will surely suck up more time and resources the city doesn't have. plus the president they're appealing to has as much popularity as a flea-bitten skunk. if bush does one thing right, i hope he doesn't grant the request of sanders and hunter.
now the city of san diego, as if it doesn't have bigger fish to fry, will take up the issue again in a may 23rd council meeting.
insanity is apparently doing the same things over and over again and expecting a different result.
it's time to give up this fight mr. sanders, just like you gave up the fight on the chargers' stadium.

sparky's closed during the afternoon of may 8, 2006 in order to repair a clogged sewer, which affected the toilets in the men's room of the tavern.
the last south park day at sparky's is scheduled for may 13, 2006. above is the piece i made for it. we'll have a lot of cool stuff on-tap for the event, so if you're in the neighborhood you should consider paying a visit.
